FY18-19 Individual Artist Project

The Individual Artist Project grant category supports Oakland-resident individual artists producing art activities in Oakland that culminate in a local public outcome for the benefit of the community. Such activities may include, but are not limited to, performances of dance, music or theater, visual art and public art projects, classes and workshops, exhibitions, and literary activities. The request amount is $4,999.

All arts and cultural activities for which FY 2018-2019 Cultural Funding Program support is requested must occur within the City of Oakland between July 1, 2018 and June 30, 2019.

If grant is awarded
, an Oakland Business Tax Certificate (BTC) in the name of the Individual artist grantee must be obtained. It is not a requirement to have one to apply for this grant.


Eligibility

Artists who have received funds in the Individual Artist Project category for two consecutive years are ineligible to apply for one year (i.e. if you were awarded funds in FY16-17 and FY17-18, you may not apply this year, FY18-19, but may submit an application next year for the FY19-20 funding cycle.) Applicant organizations must: 1) Be based in Oakland at the time of application; 2) Maintain Oakland residency throughout the grant period

Proof of applicant's residency is required and may be satisfied by submitting a copy of one of the following:
  • Bank Statement
  • Utility Bill
  • Rental Agreement

Eligible Expenses:

  • Artistic and administrative personnel salaries, wages, and/or fees
  • Office, rehearsal or necessary rental space
  • General office supplies related to the project
  • Marketing, promotion and publicity expenses

Ineligible Expenses:

  • Activities occurring outside of Oakland
  • Social functions, parties, receptions and/or fundraising events
  • Food and beverages
  • Out-of-state travel



EVALUATION AND SCORING

A qualified, review panel will evaluate applications based on the criteria listed below

1. Cultural Funding Program Goals & Objectives (20 points maximum)

Evidence of the organization’s programs advancing one or more of the following Cultural Funding Program goals/objectives:
  • Support activities that present forms of artistic expression which enhance understanding of and respect for diverse cultural traditions and heritages.
  • Support activities that are creative, innovative, and/or progressive in nature.
  • Encourage collaborations between neighborhood community programs, artists and/or arts organizations.
  • Encourage cross-discipline and/or cross-cultural collaborations among artists and organizations.
  • Enhance and stimulate economic development efforts throughout Oakland.
  • Provide economic support for professional artists.
Note: Applicants will not be penalized for advancing only one of the above goals/objectives. The score will reflect how applicant is performing in respect to the applicable goal(s)/objective(s).

2. Artistic Quality (30 points maximum)

  • Project consistent with stated artistic mission.
  • Qualifications of staff and artistic personnel directly participating in project.
  • Work sample, reviews, video, audio and/or other materials provided as demonstration of artistic integrity.

3. Implementation (30 points maximum)

  • History of consistent and successful execution of the same or similar projects.
  • Current capacity of organization to successfully produce the project within the projected timeline.
  • Appropriateness of requested amount to the budget and scope of the project.

4. Marketing and Outreach (20 points maximum)

Demonstration of organization’s ability and commitment to improve exposure to, understanding of, and respect for diverse cultural traditions and values by:
  • Identification of target audiences.
  • Comprehensive, appropriate and realistic marketing plan.
  • Potential impact of project to benefit the Oakland community (e.g. number of direct participants, number of audience served).

  • Work Sample that demonstrates the quality of your artistic work
